Electronica A Dystopian Novel Of Music Dance And Revolution eBook Jessica Benya Reviews
Jessica Benya creates a fascinating world within the pages of Electronica. Music and dance usually represent modes of creative personal expression and freedom. However the elites within this dystopian world use the very tools of freedom to control people. DJ fights to find her own way, to find herself through the curtain of control. Benya draws you into DJ's world, into her heart, and into her battle with the prosaic skill of a true artist. You really feel the beat in this wonderful book. You care about DJ and cheer her on as she fights for genuine identity. If you are like me, you will find some poignant insights to keep long after you'very turned the last page.
A similar concept to the Divergent series, with a strong female protagonist struggling to find her place in a society that insists on neat pigeon-holes for everyone. This is a fast-paced read, likely to appeal to young teen readers who enjoy music and dance.
Discrimination, equality, stereotypes, music, youth trying to be controlled, youth who want to find who they want to be, and a giant game of rounds that determines ones occupation, spouse, and place in life. All of this and more is found in Electronica, a dense, action-packed book by Jessica Benya.
Many will equate this to Divergent, due to the female primary character and the basic similarity to one's path being determined by a game/challenge, but don't be fooled. Electronica uses music and dance, both things in most of our lives that are important expressions. I won't give away any secrets, rather if music is important to you and it very much is for me, then you will root for DJ in her battle against the council and society that tries to manage society by putting them in controlled groups. Music is an important part of my life and yet I have a wide-range of tastes and I would not want to be placed in a group of just one genre. Sometimes I'm a rocker, other times classical, still other times techno/trance and still other times pop.
This book is more than just a literary version of "Dance, Dance Revolution", rather it speaks to the desire for control by society to prevent fighting, wars or disagreements in contrast for the need for individuals to determine their own path. You'll find yourself tapping your feet to the beat and perhaps like me, moving a little as you imagine yourself in the opening dance battle or those throughout the book.
In the end, I believe you'll relate to one or more the characters in this book and certainly the overall theme. Get this book for the youth in your life and get another copy for yourself. Use it to open up discussion of music's influence and teh need to find your own path, but with others assistance and to celebrate the uniqueness each of us have and how they can be encouraged!

Ms. Benya's not only crafts an engaging and evolving plot line with multiple and believable characters, but her easy to read writing style just pulls the reader into the story and keeps them there. I was turning pages with an eagerness that surprised me. Time just seemed to stand still while I dove into a world totally foreign to me.
But the human struggles and life lessons remain the same. The YA audience could easily relate to the struggles with value systems that do not mesh with those yearning to try their wings and discover - on their own- who they are and what they want to be. While situated in a fantastical world, the parallels to our own are quite apparent and are the perfect 'hook' to grab impressionable readers into a path of self-discovery.
A great story about a young woman who feels oppressed and is struggling to be her own person. Every major decision about how she lives her life is made for her, by someone in "the system." But she doesn't want to live her life the way she is told to live it, she wants to find her own way. She has strong desires, and her idea of "self" is contrary to what the system wants from her. She can buckle, and accept her fate, or she can take action. This protagonist chooses to fight an oppressive society, and everyone in it who would prevent her from becoming the young woman she desperately wants to be. Non-stop action in a wildly imaginative world. Well told. I highly recommend this book.
